Artificial corneas could restore vision to millions... |

In a first-in-human clinical study led by Dr. May Griffith, artificial cornea implants made from chemically crosslinked recombinant human collagen were implanted into 10 patients in Sweden. They induced the patients’ own endogenous corneal stem cells and nerves to regenerate the damaged organ, which normally does not regenerate. At four years post-operative, all 10 patients were showing stably integrated implants without the need for immunosuppression. These corneal implants are a viable replacement for the limited global supply of donor corneas and the biocompatibility issues presented by plastic prostheses.
